Summer School in the Frame of DAAD-Programme "Hochschulpartnerschaften mit Irak"
31 students from Iraq visit the Summer School at the TU Dortmund Faculty of Spatial Planning in cooperation with the University of Duhok
31 students from the University of Duhok in northern Iraq are attending a three-week summer school in Germany. At the beginning of the joint BSc program, 16 students of spatial planning came to their partner faculty at the TU Dortmund to attend the Summer School as part of their studies. This is the fifth time, after a break in 2020 because of Corona-pandemic that the Summer School has been organised which students of the sixth semester have to complete as part of their studies in Duhok. As always, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) supports this measure.
Dortmund is the first station for students studying in the sixth semester in the Bachelor's programme "Planning in Iraq". This course of study is traditionally supported by the Faculty of Spatial Planning of the TU Dortmund. "The three-week stay in Germany is certainly a highlight of their studies," says Dr. Hasan Sinemillioglu, who played a key role in the program for the students.
On the one hand, students at the TU Dortmund are familiarized with the spatial planning course of study in Dortmund. On the other hand, speakers present planning procedures in Germany - with a focus on planning in the German Ruhr region. Municipal planning using Dortmund as an example is just as important as landscape planning, also from an ecological point of view.
The second week of the Summer School takes Kurdish students to Berlin. A visit to the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs is on the agenda and the relationship of the former GDR to the former Federal Republic. Logistics and transport systems are topics for students in the third week when they "move" to Hamburg. A period of reflection concludes the Summer School, which offers the opportunity for student-planned excursions.

"Even though the Kurdish region in northern Iraq has been partially spared from armed conflict, the upheavals that the conflict in Iraq has brought, and still brings, also present the country with spatial planning challenges. We are pleased to be able to help them address these challenges."
